"What if I get the Death card????"
VooDoo, Black Magic, Witchcraft, work of the devil etc. These are all popular misconceptions regarding the practice of Tarot, widely brought on by Hollywood movies.
One of my favorite misconceptions is the fear of the Death card in Tarot. The Death card is actually one of the most fascinating cards. It is extremely rare that the Death card means actual physical death. What the Death card represents is CHANGE. In order for a rebirth to happen, a 'death' must take place. You have to rid yourself of the 'old' before you can really grasp the 'new'. For you to meet and start a life with the person you are meant to be with, an old relationship must 'die'. In order to start the job of your dreams, your current job must end. Major changes and upheavals are a necessary part of our life experience. Although change can be difficult and emotional in the beginning, the following 'rebirth' is always worth it. The Death card just makes you aware of an upcoming change and allows you to prepare for it.
Another misconception is that the reading is 'set in stone'. The way I describe a tarot reading is that it is a snapshot of the now. A spread will tell you where you have been, where you are now and where you are headed provided you stay on the same path and do nothing to change the course. Whether the outcome is positive or negative, YOU have the power to change it. The spread just makes you aware.
"Tarot is not Christian!" Although many religions have a negative view of Tarot and say it is 'the work of the devil' or 'turning your back on God' - nothing could be further from the truth. Yes, some do utilize the practice of Tarot for dark purposes but that is not the root of Tarot. Many of the symbols of Tarot come from Christianity. The Judgement card shows Gabriel blowing his horn. Some decks utilize the imagery of Adam and Eve for the Lovers card. It is the reader, not the cards that are important in this case. You will want to know what a reader's intent and philosophy is before you have a reading done.
I encourage all of my querents and future querents to ask me questions and tell me what their 'fears' are before a reading is done. This way the misconceptions can be cleared away and a relaxed and trusting atmosphere can be built.
